Perfect Season?
I’m having deja vu. In fact, I’ve had it for 10 straight weeks now. Colts and Saints win yet again. So my question is, who is more likely to go undefeated? My answer is the Colts. This week the Colts knocked off a hungry Ravens team on the upswing, eager for a win to get them back into the playoff picture. To me the key between the two teams (Colts and Saints) is the Colts’ defense. Watching them play against a good Ravens offense showed me just how good it actually is, even though it is missing a couple key starters, particularly in the secondary. Last night’s performance was the epitome of a bend-but-don’t-break defense. They held the Ravens to 5 field goals, and that was after two Peyton Manning interceptions (even one bad decision from Peyton seems to come around as often as Halley’s comet) set them up with great field position and momentum.

"Hey guys, do I look like a raven when I flap my arms like this?!"
The Saints’ defense, on the other hand, relies on big plays to get the job done. The problem is that, like a flashy, high-powered offensive team with no defense, one game the big plays won’t be there, and you won’t know what to do. Now don’t get me wrong, the Saints are a great team, but it takes more than greatness to go undefeated in the NFL. It takes poise, brains, and a little bit of luck. Who’s more poised than Vinatieri (I know he’s injured but still)? Who’s more football smart than Peyton Manning? And what is luckier than a horseshoe?
X-Factor #2 is number 18, Peyton Manning. I don’t really enjoy watching the NFL that much, but watching him play quarterback really is a treat. It is just amazing to watch him pick apart defenses. I couldn’t even imagine what it would be like if you actually used to play the position and knew it even better than I do. I liken it to being a burger flipper at McDonald’s and then going home and watching Iron Chef Morimoto cook up a burger. See if that doesn’t put your work to shame. Not to mention what a humanitarian the guy is:
All kidding aside, the Saints may go undefeated and the Colts may lose the rest of their games, but from where I’m sitting, after watching several of their games, I think the Colts have the best chance of being the second ever undefeated NFL team.
The Colts have a better chance because of the 4th-and-2 by BB. The Pats beat the Colts for the most part, and lost by 1 point, so given that narrow escape by the team which is now obligated to beat anyone trying for a perfect season, they have a good chance.
Next monday we will get a treat of a game in the Saints-Pats game. If the Saints beat the Pats too, then they should go undefeated, and the Pats will have some serious questions going into the post season. But if the Brady Bunch give one L to the Saints, I won’t be surprised
Dude, do you really think that the Colts team that had just driven down the field 3 plays earlier and scored a touchdown in 1:40-something seconds WITHOUT a timeout was about to be stopped by a Patriot’s defense that was on its heels? Why do you think BB went for it in the first place? I know I’m in the minority, but I think going for it was totally the right call. Everyone’s saying, “He’s showing no confidence in his defense” but what is wrong with showing confidence that your offense can gain 2 yards?
And the funny thing is, in my opinion, Minnesota is the best team int he league right now. Their defense is better than both the Colts and the Saints and their offense is more than capable of creating explosive plays. The Saints have Brees, the Colts have Manning, the Vikings have Favre and Peterson. I know we’re talking about undefeateds, but do you guys agree with me about the Vikings?
Go Gata!
I agree with the Vikes being pretty darn good
but the thing with the Pats is that the 4th-and-2 wasn’t a terrible call. Sure you can play the what-if’s but I actually liked it at the time, very 2007 Pats ish. The problem though, was wasting 2!!!! Time outs on that drive. Two. They literally used one before first down, and before 4th down. If they had a time out to challenge, I’m pretty sure the spot would have been a first, I think Faulk had it.
But my point is that the Colts seem more flawed than the Saints, especially with all the injuries to their secondary. It really depends on how the Saints play the Pats on monday if I think they can finish or not. I don’t think they will. But I do think that the Saints and Vikings are meeting in the NFC Championship. If they don’t, there’s a massive upset somewhere in the playoffs
